Individual Counselling
Empower yourself
Mental well-being can be confusing at times as it is often related primarily to different forms of pathology like Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Bipolar Depression, Anorexia Nervosa, Borderline Personality Disorder or other forms of more severe psychopathology like Schizophrenia.
What about the developmental formative years before maladaptive coping mechanisms are employed in an individual’s best attempt at coping within an environment not conducive to optimum development?
Little is said about the mentally distressing situations that are often overlooked and ignored and contribute to the development of psychological pathology. Examples of these include but are not limited to:
- the distress that is caused by entering a new career and being faced with imposter syndrome,
- changing schools to a new environment with little to no support for adjusting,
- picking the right course to study that will dictate your daily routine for the rest of your life,
- preparing for exams while faced with personal difficulties in your home life,
- buying a house in a volatile economy,
- finding out a spouse has been unfaithful,
- contemplating if divorce is the only option as a result of indifference and resentment,
- being emotionally or physically abused,
- losing a partner to death,
- losing a child with a miscarriage,
- losing your job,
- getting a new job and developing imposter syndrome,
- wanting to come out to family members but fearing rejection,
- becoming a parent and struggling to adjust to your new role,
- becoming burnt out from burning the candle on both sides
- or receiving a terminal diagnosis.
The list of life events that occur and cause severe discomfort is truly endless. When left unaddressed it often has a snowballing accumulative effect, where an individual capacity to manage increasingly deteriorates, resulting in fight or flight and the employment of more mall adaptive coping mechanisms.
Mental well-being involves feelings, thoughts, and behaviours that hinder an individual’s life. It results in changes in an individual’s mood, their perception of reality and their ability to organise and focus their thoughts. These are all signs of mental distress, and more often than not greatly affect an individual’s ability to function optimally at work, in relationships and within their communities.
All of these can be addressed in individual counselling in the pursuit of balance and discovering your most secure and authentic self.
Individual Counselling
Individual counselling or therapy, is a one-on-one therapeutic process between a client and a licensed mental health professional like a registered counsellor. The goal of individual counselling or therapy is to address and work through personal difficulties, emotional difficulties, or mental health concerns in a private and confidential setting.
- One of the key aspects being Personalised Attention, meaning the registered counselling is tailored specifically to the individual, focusing on their unique difficulties, experiences, and goals.
- A Safe and Confidential Environment, all sessions are conducted in a secure setting where clients can freely discuss their thoughts, feelings, and experiences without fear of judgment or breach of confidentiality.
- Developing a Therapeutic Relationship, building a trusting and supportive relationship between the client and registered counsellor is central to the process. This relationship helps clients feel comfortable exploring their concerns and challenges.
- Goal Setting, clients and registered counsellors often work together to set specific goals for counselling, which might include resolving particular difficulties, improving coping strategies, or achieving personal growth.
- Variety of Techniques, registered counsellors may use various therapeutic techniques and approaches depending on the client’s precenting needs and preferences. This could include:
- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
- Gotman Therapy,
- Dialectical Behavioural Therapy
- Solution Focused Therapy
- Traumatic Incidence Reduction
- Narrative Theraphy
- Imargo Theraphy
- Self-Exploration, clients have the opportunity to explore their thoughts, feelings, behaviours, and past experiences in depth, which can lead to greater self-awareness and insight.

- Support and Guidance, registered counsellors provide support, encouragement, and guidance to help clients navigate challenges, make decisions, and implement changes in their lives
Who is individual counselling for
Individual psychological counselling or therapy can be beneficial for a wide range of difficulties and goals.
- It can aid with mental health disorders, as it provides support for conditions such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and eating disorders, helping individuals manage symptoms and improve their quality of life.
- With emotional difficulties, counselling or therapy helps individuals deal with emotions such as anticipatory grief, anxiety, sadness, anger or loneliness etc., allowing them to process these feelings and develop healthier coping mechanisms.
- With stress management, it offers strategies and tools to manage and reduce stress related to exams, divorce, work, relationships, or other life demands.
- For personal growth and self-improvement, registered counsellors support individuals in gaining self-awareness, enhancing self-esteem, and working towards personal goals and self-improvement.
- With relationship difficulties, counselling or therapy addresses challenges in personal relationships, including family dynamics, romantic relationships, or friendships, helping individuals improve communication and conflict resolution.
- In instances of Trauma and PTS, registered counsellors assist those who have experienced traumatic events in processing their experiences, managing symptoms of post-traumatic stress (PTS), and finding ways to heal with interventions like (ACT).
- In activating behavioural changes, registered counsellors assist individuals in addressing and modifying unwanted behaviours, such as addiction, impulsive and compulsive habits, or self-destructive tendencies.
- With life transitions, counselling or therapy supports individuals navigating life changes, such as receiving an overwhelming diagnosis, becoming a parent, immigrating to a foreign country, divorce, job loss, or retirement, and providing guidance and coping strategies during these transitions.
- When coping with grief and loss, counselling or therapy provides a space to grieve and process the loss of loved ones, or the inability to conceive, helping individuals come to terms with their grief and find a way forward.
- With cognitive and emotional challenges, registered counsellors address difficulties like negative thought patterns with cognitive behavioural therapy, emotional regulation difficulties with dialectical behavioural therapy, and self-defeating behaviours, helping individuals develop healthier ways of thinking and feeling.
- During times of decision-making and problem-solving, registered counsellors aid in making important life decisions and solving personal problems by offering a structured space to explore options and weigh pros and cons. Overall, individual therapy offers a supportive environment where clients can work through their personal challenges, develop new skills, and achieve a greater sense of well-being and fulfilment.
