CM Pieterse - Trauma Counselling

Empower yourself

The word “trauma” literally means wound, shock, or injury. Psychological trauma is a person’s experience of emotional distress resulting from an event that overwhelms the capacity to emotionally digest it. The precipitating event may be a one-time occurrence or a series of occurrences perceived as seriously harmful or life-threatening to oneself or loved ones. People process experiences differently, and not everyone has the same reaction to any event; what one person experiences as trauma may not cause distress for another.

Traumatic experiences undermine a person’s sense of safety in the world and creates a sense that catastrophe could strike at any time. Parental loss in childhood, motor vehicle accidents, physical violence, sexual assault, military combat experiences, earthquakes, the unexpected loss of a loved one, violent disruption—are events that can lead to a trauma. People typically replay the experience in their mind over and over and continually think about what happened. The experience leads to changes in brain function marked by a hypersensitivity to threats. Children as well as adults are susceptible to trauma. Shock, fear, anger, sadness, difficulty concentrating, and a sense of helplessness are common features of the immediate trauma response. Children may suddenly develop behavioural problems and exhibit clinginess.

The facts are that unfortunately we do live in a world where we are all at risk of being exposed to a traumatic event. We would like to think that it won’t happen to us, but in reality, many people are affected by the evils of this world. Trauma refers to the body or mind being overwhelmed by traumatic events. Psychological trauma in particular occurs as a result of a distressing event that leads the sufferer to question their beliefs; while destroying their assumptions of trust. If you have experienced a traumatic event, you may feel socially disconnected and somewhat numb, leading to feelings of isolation. On top of this, you may find yourself feeling more afraid and vulnerable than before the event. Trauma counselling will not be able to reverse what happened to you, but it enables you to work through PSTD symptoms in a safe and contained space with a trained and experienced professional.

Therapeutic approaches in trauma counselling that I have been trained and supervised in

  • Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT): This approach helps individuals identify and challenge negative thought patterns related to the trauma and develop healthier ways of thinking and behaving.
  • Exposure Therapy: This technique involves gradually and safely exposing individuals to reminders of the trauma to reduce their fear and avoidance behaviours.
  • Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT): Specifically designed for children and adolescents, TF-CBT integrates cognitive-behavioural techniques with trauma-sensitive principles.
  • Narrative Therapy: This approach involves helping individuals reframe and make sense of their traumatic experiences through storytelling and narrative construction.
  • Somatic Experiencing: Focuses on addressing the physical manifestations of trauma stored in the body and aims to help individuals release and regulate these physical responses.
  • Traumatic Incident Reduction (TIR) has steps. The first step is to identify the traumatic incident causing difficulties and revisit the event while focusing on thoughts, feelings, and physical sensations at the time. This is followed by the processing of emotions while receiving support, which might involve exploring any unresolved feelings or beliefs associated with the trauma, A reassessment of the impact of the trauma by the client is then done during which the client evaluates how the traumatic event has affected their life and current functioning. The goal is to reduce the emotional charge and integrate the experience in a healthier way. Achieving resolution is the final stage of the intervention, where techniques designed to help individuals process and resolve the emotional impact of traumatic or distressing events are utilised.

Benefits of Trauma Counselling

  1. Reduction of Symptoms: Helps reduce symptoms of trauma such as flashbacks, intrusive thoughts, anxiety, and depression.
  2. Healing and Recovery: Supports emotional healing by allowing individuals to process and make sense of their traumatic experiences.
  3. Improved Coping Skills: Provides tools and strategies for managing trauma-related stress and improving overall emotional regulation.
  4. Enhanced Quality of Life: Aims to restore functionality and improve quality of life by addressing trauma’s impact on daily living and relationships.
  5. Increased Self-Awareness: Promotes greater self-awareness and understanding of how trauma affects thoughts, feelings, and behaviours.
  6. Restoration of Control: Helps individuals regain a sense of control and empowerment over their lives and future.

Trauma counselling is a collaborative process between the counsellor and the client, tailored to the individual’s specific needs and experiences. The goal is to help individuals process their trauma, develop effective coping strategies, and work towards a healthier, more fulfilling life.

Trauma Counselling

Trauma counselling is a specialised form of counselling aimed at helping individuals process and recover from traumatic experiences.

Trauma can result from various events, such as abuse, accidents, natural disasters, or witnessing violence,  it often has profound effects on an individual’s mental, emotional, and physical well-being.

  • Trauma counselling provides a safe and supportive environment, during trauma counselling a safe, non-judgmental space is provided where individuals can talk about their traumatic experiences at their own pace, which is crucial for personal insight to develop and healing to begin.
  • Understanding trauma responses, assistance is provided to the client with the aid of psycho-education to gain insight and a deeper understanding of how traumatic events have a physiological effect on their constitution, including what common psychological responses they could expect such as flashbacks, nightmares, anxiety, or depression after a traumatic event occurred.
  • Processing Trauma, with the use of evidence-based therapeutic techniques, clients that had experienced a trauma work closely with a counsellor who facilitates to process of integrating the client’s traumatic experiences, which can help reduce the emotional impact and distress associated with the traumatic event resulting in the acquisition of more adaptive coping strategies.
  • Coping strategies, during counselling more adaptive processing and coping skills are provided to better manage the symptoms that result from a traumatic event, such as mindfulness and self-regulation skills for anxiety and panic attacks, or grounding exercises for emotional numbness and dissociation.
  • Restoring Functionality aims to help individuals regain a sense of normalcy and functionality in their daily lives, which may have been disrupted by the trauma experienced.
  • Building Resilience, the counselling process during this period supports individuals in building skills to in future have a map towards processing other traumatic events, as they had accomplished navigating and working through trauma before. Resulting in resilience and a new skill or strength, to aid in recovery and move forward with a renewed sense of control and empowerment.
